Silent Sports – Hiking, Fat Tire Biking, Birdwatching, Skiing and Snowshoeing
Stonehaven provides excellent trails for the silent sports enthusiast! In 2016 when we first bought the property we began to carve out beautiful trails for our future guests to enjoy. We spent a year planning and creating several trails that now wind throughout our 40 acres. Bring along your binoculars to enjoy the birds and wildlife as you walk along Cherry Tree Trail! Or take an early morning cross-country ski on Sunrise Trail as the sun comes up and peeks through the trees to say good morning! We take our dog Reggie on daily walks on various trails, but his personal favorite is Cherry Tree Trail because he knows that’s the one that leads down to the lake!
Ice Skating
The city of Rice Lake keeps a flooded rink open offering skating.
Sledding
We have a couple of awesome sledding hills for small children and adults alike! We provide a variety of sleds at no extra charge for your downhill enjoyment!
Leisure Activities
We provide the following opportunities for your family’s enjoyment: bocce ball, bean bag toss, and frisbee.
Our motorized boats can be reserved by calling Lori or Ted. You may reserve in advance or just let us know when you get to the resort what boats you are interested in. All of our boats are launched through our own private dock.

Bring Your Own Boat or Motor
Guests are welcome to bring their own boat as long as it is 16 feet or less and not an inboard. We also do not allow jet skis, speed boats, and wave runners. Tuscobia Lake has areas that have underwater stumps that are not conducive to high speed boating. We like to know for parking how many guest boats are coming so please let us know if you are bringing a boat. The unofficial boat launch is at the south end of the lake on 23rd Ave about a half mile from our resort entrance.
The Rice Lake and surrounding communities offer a large variety of recreational and leisure activities for you to enjoy during your stay at Stonehaven. Recreational Trails
Stonehaven Cottages is the perfect location for all of your recreational trail adventures! Our resort offers direct access to the Wild Rivers State Trail which provides hundreds of miles of recreational fun such as hiking, biking, snowshoeing, horseback riding, snowmobiling, ATV, and cross-country skiing throughout northern Wisconsin. In addition, the Tuscobia State Trail head is located just 2 miles north of our resort and intersects with the Wild Rivers State Trail.
Wild Rivers State Trail
One of our favorite trails is the Wild Rivers State Trail. Whether you’re looking to do a short day hike, or a long snowmobiling ride, Wild Rivers Trails has something for everyone & every season. Measuring at 104 miles in length, the trail goes from Superior to Rice Lake. The trail is primarily made of compacted gravel. While biking is allowed on the trail, it is highly suggested that a mountain or off-road bike is used. Road bikes are not recommended. The trail may be difficult at times to navigate on horseback as well. Learn more.
Tuscobia State Trail
76-mile retired railroad grade from Barron County to Park Falls converted to hiking, biking, horseback riding and snowmobiling. The trail is well-marked and maintained. Western Tuscobia Trail to Angus is joined with a section of the 1,000 mile long Ice Age National Scenic Trail. Learn more.
Ice Age National Scenic Trail – 35.9 mi
The Ice Age trail showcases some of the most dynamic glacial geology in Wisconsin. The sections of the Ice Age Trail in northern Barron County are some of the most exciting sections of the 1,000-mile trail system. The Chippewa Moraine Ice Age Interpretive Center, located about a half hour south of Rice Lake, just east of New Auburn on County M. Learn more.
Timberland Hills Cross Country Ski Trail – Cumberland
Impressive 24k trail system. Wide trails and many challenging sections. Timberland Hills West is a 2.5k section right next door that is lighted until around 11 pm. (715) 822-3727. Learn more.
Pipestone Quarry Trails (for mountain biking or hiking) – 3 mi
This NEW Trail system is part of the expanding CORBA trail network. The trail is East of Rice Lake approx. 7 miles at 1971 27 ½ st. This trail weaves thru Northern Hardwood forest, up and down overexposed ledge rock and more. More trails being added.
There are numerous larger lakes in the area that are perfect for our guests who are wishing to water ski, jet ski, or run high speed boats. A couple we can recommend are Rice Lake and Long Lake which are both just a few minutes from our resort. The Rice Lake boat landing is just 2 miles from our resort and Long Lake is only about 15 miles. Both offer excellent fishing as well. Rice Lake has also been seeded with Musky a few years back and is a popular Musky lake along with a wide variety of game fish including bluegill, largemouth and smallmouth bass, northern pike, crappie, and walleye.
Golfing
Our area’s numerous golf courses provide a challenge for all, from the novice to the experienced golfer. Choose from 9-and 18-hole layouts. Each course varies in yardage, design and difficulty, but all offer unmatched scenery.
Butternut Hills Golf Course

Blue Hills – 22+ mi
The Blue Hills Trail System offers hiking during the spring, summer and fall. During the winter, snowshoers can trek alongside the cross-country ski trails or explore thousands of acres of county forest lands. From Rice Lake, head east on Highway C (Sawyer Street) 10 miles to the Barron-Rusk County Line where Barron County Highway C becomes Rusk County Highway O. Continue on Highway O another 10 miles to Fire Lane Road. Head north on Fire Lane Road 2 ½ miles. Learn more.
